The 75th Anniversary of the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences (CIPSH) is a momentous occasion that warrants a conference to reflect on past achievements and chart a path for the future. On this occasion, with endorsement from the CIPSH, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) proudly announces the International Conference Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the CIPSH, to be held in Beijing, China, on 21-24 September 2024.

The main theme of the conference is “New Humanities: Fostering Interactions between Science and Humanities.” In this era of rapid technological advancement and interconnected global challenges, it is essential to explore and foster interactions between humanities and sciences. The proposed conference aims to bring together scholars, researchers, and practitioners from diverse disciplines to examine the intersection of humanities and sciences and explore how these synergies can address contemporary societal issues.

To facilitate the interaction between science and humanities, we propose the conference to have a Special Focus on “Time: Conceptions, Experiences, and Expressions.” Time is essential for human existence. Temporal experience is all-pervasive. It is an important constituent of all human knowledge, experience, and modes of expression. The conference’s special focus on time will surely stimulate studies of the role of time in philosophy, religion, history, history of science, music, literature, anthropology, the sciences of the mind, the life sciences, and the physical sciences. By definition, this is going to be a multidisciplinary approach and will be approached from cross-cultural perspectives. In this way, we are articulating the CIPSH’s mission of promoting “dialogue among the disciplines, especially to bring the human sciences and the social and natural sciences closer together.” We strongly and sincerely call for proposals of symposia addressing this fascinating theme of the conference.

The 21st century emerges as a mixture of hope and anxiety. The humanities enable us to understand, in a rational way, the relevance of creativity, literature, cultural diversity, or long-term reasoning for resisting alienation, xenophobia, or intolerance. Historical knowledge, critical thinking, and nuanced analysis of human ideas and values enable the understanding of the growing complexity of our globalizing world.

Particularly, in the wake of the global pandemic and the subsequent crises facing humanity, it is evident that the world is standing at a crucial crossroad. Issues such as the emergence of a new Cold War, increasing decoupling between nations, and potential clashes of civilizations pose significant challenges to global harmony and progress. Facing these crises and challenges, it is crucial to recognize the potential of science as a unifying and connecting force between civilizations. This conference aims to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, foster mutual understanding, and seek solutions to global problems through the lens of scientific knowledge.
